Introducing The Old White TPC Course At The Greenbrier

The PGA TOUR announced today that The Old White Course at The Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, is now part of the TPC Network of clubs as part of a licensing agreement for the property. One of four championship layouts at the historic Greenbrier, the newly named The Old White TPC serves as host site of the TOUR's Greenbrier Classic, which will be played July 25 - 31, 2011. The announcement was made by PGA TOUR Golf Course Properties President and EVP, Championship Management David Pillsbury.

"We are thrilled to add this legendary layout to the TPC Network and look forward to continuing The Greenbrier's tradition for superb golf, remarkable amenities and personalized service," said Pillsbury. "In partnership with The Greenbrier management team, PGA TOUR players and tournament fans, we also look forward to positively impacting the local community through the TOUR's 'Together, anything's possible' charitable mission."

Included in the TPC relationship is management consultation from PGA TOUR. As part of that, 30-year golf industry veteran Burton Baine has been hired to be on property to advise the owner regarding day to day golf course operations. In addition to managing some of the country's leading high-end private golf clubs, including TPC Piper Glen in Charlotte, NC, Baine is an accomplished player and Class A PGA of America golf professional - having been named PGA Northern Texas Section Player of the Year as well as PGA Northern Texas Section Golf Professional of the Year.

"We are delighted to enter into this agreement with the PGA TOUR and the TPC Network, two of the most respected brands in all of sports," said Jim Justice, owner of The Greenbrier and West Virginia native. "Together with the PGA TOUR, under the leadership of Burton Baine, I am confident The Old White TPC will regain its position as one of the most iconic golf layouts in the world and help restore The Greenbrier to its original glory as one of the most exclusive resorts on the globe."

Designed in 1914 by Charles Blair Macdonald, The Old White TPC was named for the well-known Old White Hotel, which stood on the grounds from 1858 to 1922. One of the first golfers to play The Old White was President Woodrow Wilson in April of 1914. Since then, some of golf's most prominent players have tested their skills on the par-70, 6,826-yard layout, including Ben Hogan, Jack Nicklaus, Sam Snead, Nick Faldo and Tom Watson. Last year, Stuart Appleby fired a closing round of 59 to win the inaugural Greenbrier Classic.

Macdonald, a dominant figure in the early history of American golf, took advantage of the topography's undulating terrain to create a challenging and visually stunning layout that pays tribute to some of the most famous European holes n golf. The Old White TPC's No. 8 hole was styled after the Redan at North Berwick, No. 13 after the Alps at Prestwick, and No. 15 after the Eden at St. Andrews.

In addition to The Old White TPC, The Greenbrier includes the Dick Wilson/Bob Cupp-designed Meadows Course and the Greenbrier Course, the only resort course in the world to host both the Ryder Cup and the Solheim Cup, which was originally designed by Seth Raynor and re-designed by Jack Nicklaus in 1977. The Greenbrier's fourth course is The Snead, a private membership layout designed by Tom Fazio. World Golf Hall of Fame member Tom Watson, winner of 39 PGA TOUR championships and current Champions Tour player, serves as golf professional emeritus at The Greenbrier.

All three resort courses are complemented by a full-service clubhouse encompassing an award-winning golf shop and a variety of hospitality venues and amenities. Expert instruction is provided for golfers of all ages.

The Old White TPC at The Greenbrier is located at 300 W. Main Street in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. For more information, visit www.tpc.com.
